Great News on Polio Plus

Rotary clubs around the world are celebrating the recent grant of $50 million for Polio Plus, from the Gates Foundation, set up by Bill and Melinda Gates.

The Gates Foundation gave Rotary a $100 million challenge grant for polio eradication in November 2007, increasing it to $355 million in 2009. Rotary agreed to raise $200 million in matching funds by June 30, 2012. This target has already been achieved.

The polio eradication programme started in 1985. In 1988 there were around 8,000 cases of polio around the world. Last year there were fewer than 650. The disease has never been stopped in Afghanistan, Pakistan or Nigeria. India, however, has just reported its first polio-free year. (Click here for more information on Polio Plus)
